Crystal Son Brownell is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Riverside. She is “A.B.D.” an abbreviation for “all but destroyed” (tongue-in-cheek) or “all but dissertation.” She is attempting to finish a dissertation on the intersectionalities of race, gender, and sexuality in Asian American cultural productions such as poetry, novels, and performance art. She lives in the smoggy hamlet of Riverside, and embraces the low-life. While Riverside is often imagined in the SoCal imaginary as emptied of culture it is actually a ripe location for observing queer life on the margins, or those places staunchly outside of gay mecca frames of reference. She identifies as “hapa-sian.” In other words, she’s of mixed racial origins: her mother is Korean, born in Gyeongju, and her father is WASPy (although technically speaking, he is half Portuguese). She invites readers to rant, rave, and conversate in relation to her posts!
