Dear Queer Blogosphere,
What's up?
I'm Nathan Lyle Rescate-Gomez Cedilla (but everyone just calls me Nate, for short).
Born and raised in SD, now residing in Berkeley and the Bay Area.
An Asian American Studies and Ethnic Studies double major at UC Berkeley.
Proudly identifies as a queer pansexual Pilipin@ American male.
Loves puppy dogs, spoken word, flannel shirts, indie, hip hop, and street art.
Charles asked me to write for this site. I'm honored by such a request. I have mad respect for Wiqaable and its contributions to our communities :]
First and foremost, a little somethin' somethin' on an art form I love. Although I've only been doing it for a year now, I'm always down to listen to it, spit it, and breathe it. In a weird kind of way, it's the truest way I know how to express myself.
Spoken word is legit. It's my favorite mode of expression in terms of emotional, social, and political conflict. As the poetic sect of hip hop, spoken word is an art form that is consumable by all. Anyone can be a spoken word poet--we just have to show it.
Spoken word is politicized art.
Verbal graffitti.
A protest in iambic pentameter.
Eloquency spit over beats and looped to the bass hits of our people.
As both a consumer and participant of spoken word, I appreciate Regie Cabico's piece about the sexuality and gender portrayals of queer Asian men. Regie, you had me snappin' and throwin' my hands up at hello. I see you, Regie!
